There's a stretch of dark sand a half-hour from our door where something older than every ship ever launched is happening right now. All summer the loggerheads have come ashore on Pinellas sand to nest — and right now the hatchlings are making their run to the water, one warm night at a time.
On Saturday, August 29, we're spending the evening with them. From 5 to 7pm the Sea Turtle Trackers bring a rep straight from the beach to the Alley — the people who actually walk that sand before sunrise so the nests are still there when the little ones come up. No ticket. No cover. Just come.
What the night looks like
- A rep from the beach — someone who does the real work, there to talk hatchlings and answer whatever you want to ask.
- The Hatchling Board — a board by the door that fills with named hatchlings as the night climbs.
- Food, one-handed — a sushi boat from Nori Thai, smoked fish dip, and turtle candies from Kilwin's.
- A free raffle — every guest gets a ticket at the door. Nothing to buy.
- Name a hatchling — order the Turtle Latte and there's a baby sea turtle on St. Pete Beach carrying your name to the water.
And all day long, every stick and every pour sends something back to the beach.
Who are the Sea Turtle Trackers?
A St. Pete Beach nonprofit that has watched over the nests of St. Pete Beach, Shell Key, and Outback Key for more than forty years — protecting 1,300+ nests, walking 75,000+ hatchlings safely to the sea, and pulling 10,000+ pieces of trash off Pinellas County beaches every year. Their nests hatch from late June through October, which means on the night of the 29th there are hatchlings crossing sand a half-hour from this room. These are our beaches.
